“The loss of a Swansea/Cork Ferry Service would have a minimal impact on tourism in the City & West Cork”
John O’Donoghue -
ex-Minister for Tourism - now Chairman of the Dail

We’ve asked quite a few Cork & Kerry business people for a suitable quote in reply to John’s statement - but we couldn’t find anything that we could print !

In summary - they didn’t agree! ..... and that’s putting it very mildly.........

“An overall loss to the South-west region of €35m - the ferry brought an average of 105,000 visitors and 40,000 cars each year”
Cllr Dermot Sheehan

The Cork Business Association represents over 200 businesses in Cork City and we would like to add our support for the reinstatement of the Cork Swansea Ferry for 2009.
The CBA will lobby government Ministers and City Councillors where possible. The loss of the ferry has adversely affected traders throughout the Southwest and certainly in Cork City.
Keep up the good work.

I always travelled on the Swansea Cork Ferry for years to reduce my driving time to and from Ireland. It was always a great service. I really dislike the alternative options due to the odd hours of operation and long drives involved. Can't beat a good nights sleep, a shower and being refreshed before docking on either side. Please reinstate the service of 2009.

I used the ferry several times up to the time of it closing and I thought it was brilliant and I met some lovely people from the UK who found it great to be landed in Cork and gatway to the South and West Cork and Kerry. Its not a question of wheather it should come back but WHEN......... IT MUST come back. I bought several motorbikes in the UK and I used to look forward to the boat trip back home. With this petition I am looking forward to some FERRY good news in the not to distant future.

we need the reinstatement of the floating bridge between wales and cork for many and varied reason 1 Tourism down both in Wales and the South of Ireland 2 Trucks and commercial Lorrys need the service for deliveries of goods beeteen our 2 countries 3the service was used for private and commercial cars. The ferry stopped running when it went into one persons private hands and iof Denis murphy was still alive it would be still running(he was one of the founder directors and remained committed to it until his death RIP.)Cork County Council should move on this immediatly,I have been told that cork Harbour commissioners are not interested.

Swansea / Cork ferry was the beginning of the holiday. This ferry service was far more convenient for us and certainly less mileage than travelling to Fishguard and then down to West Cork. Bring it back.

I have so many good memories going from Cork to Swansea to visit my family in England. It was so practical and easy, right on my doorstep. When my family and i moved to Cork from Cornwall we bought a coach and move our house contents over ourselves which we wouldnt have been able to do if it wasnt for the swansea-cork. Once we were asleep under a staircase with our sleeping bags and pillows, my mum, dad, younger brother and i (we could never afford a family cabin!) and when we woke up we realised after much searching that some nice person had stolen my dads boots which he had rested next to his head as he slept..After letting the crew know they managed to find one boot in the toilets and the other i guess must have gone overboard! So dad walked off the boat in one boot and one sock :-) One of many memories we have to smile about, please please bring it back. Its a gateway to our lovely county

Been making the crossing for more than 30years, most recently with my 1961 Jaguar. Much as I enjoyed the latest drive from Rosslare with my "toy", it really is a bit of an endurance test. I do it about 4 times a year. Is it any wonder I am feeling tired? It would seem a no brainer. Isnt Irish Ferries or Stena interested and if not, why not? . I checked recently for freight ferries and there isnt one of them either. Someone must be missing an opportunity.

Having family in Kerry, we were regular passengers on the Swansea/Cork ferry.
Last year we made the marathon journey Holyhead/Dublin believing that it was only for one year but despite the promises, the service has not returned.
Please, please, please bring it back!!!!!!
PS. We're flying this year - not very enviromentaly friendly.....

With a B&B and Restaurant in West Cork, we are feeling the loss of the ferry acutely this summer. Our UK bookings are way down. The independent UK travellers with their own car (and often a dog) are almost non-existent. It is a long way down here from Rosslare or Dublin. For several couples who had been coming to holiday with us for more than ten years this is their second year without a visit to Ireland. BRING BACK THE SWANSEA CORK FERRY, PLEASE!

the drive to wales is long enough, the rest on the ferry is great knowing that it is only a very short drive home and a decent cup of tea.

One burning question WHY OH WHY when there is a good thing happening the twits (I'm being very polite) have to pull the rug!

The Swansea-Cork Ferry lent to the long and tiring journey from the UK to Cork and Kerry the convenience without which many simply went and will now again go elsewhere. Inconvenience for the travelling public seems de rigeur nowadays. But S-C bucked that trend in 1987. I hope that the Welsh and SW Munster Councils can find the moral authority to engage with each other and with business interests to resurrect this crossing. (Hot air is all very well but the failure to grasp nettles must have the late D F O'Suillivan turning in his grave.)

Just back from 7 days in Killarney, having flight from Bristol-Cork and car hire. With torrential rain at Bristol, lugging cases to terminal building, 2 hrs wait to board, wife complaining about the clothes we couldn't bring to cater for weather conditions. Return journey better but £40 excess baggage. We would have spent more in South West Ireland but for this restriction.
Don't think we will do this again but if the ferry is back at least twice/year,

Having used the swansea cork ferry service since I was a child coming to Ireland EVERY year, I am so disappointed that it is not running. My family and I travel to ireland (kerry region) about 4/5 times a year & we have had to endure the long trek from Dublin each time we take the car or the dreaded not so 'low cost airline' Ryanair trip its an absolute nightmare travelling now. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back the swansea cork ferry

I first went to Kerry with my family the year after the war ended. Since then not a year has passed without a visit.
For us, it is an arduous and expensive journey this year via Rosslare, involving two nights Band B.
Bring back the Swansea/Cork ferry link and make us all smile again.

We have a house in Glengarriff which we used to visit up to 5 times a year. The journey now is a nightmare and we find the time between visits gets longer. We feel let down that all the loyal passengers which gave Swansea Cork ferries good custom over the years have been so badly let down.

Would love to have used this ferry to cut down on driving to my holiday in Clare. At a time when it's become clear that air travel contributes significantly to global warming it makes sense to bring back this ferry. Uneconomic? Give the govt. airport susidies to ports instead.

My family love Cork and Kerry and we used to use the ferry several times a year. Now we have to go the long way around to Rosslare and drive down to the region adding to the congestion on the roads and wasting expensive petrol. The net result is that it is not worth our while and find that it is easier to go to Dover and across to Calais to spend our holiday and euros in France. If the ferry was restored we and other reluctant defectors would be delighted to return.
